There’s no substitute for social distancing, and we should all be practicing frequent hand-washing, but there are still times when we need to run to the grocery store or pharmacy to pick up essentials. In those cases, it can be difficult to keep six feet apart from the other shoppers. When you do go out, protect yourself and others by wearing a mask. The CDC recommends face coverings for everyone over the age of two, and many cities and states and even some nationwide retailers like Costco are now requiring face masks. Medical-grade face masks are best left to nurses and doctors, so the rest of us should use the fabric variety.
If you have basic sewing skills and a sewing machine, you can put your fabric scraps to work and make your own fabric face masks. A new study from researchers at the University of Chicago says that a layer of cotton combined with with silk, chiffon, or flannel can create a well-functioning filter, providing there are not gaps or leaks around the mask’s edges. Two layers of 600 thread count cotton is proven effective as well. In a pinch, you can also try a no-sew bandana mask. If you don’t want to go the DIY route, many online retailers are now offering masks for sale as well and even donating some of their proceeds to non-profits helping with COVID-19 relief. Be sure to check their shipping time as availability can be scarce. Look for machine-washable masks that have an adjustable fit.
